I do this for people who email me about drawing and how I handle this or that. Just thought I would share, and see if it would be helpful to post more.

This is great! I've heard of the negative space but never thought of using it this way to carve out figure! Thanks!

Is there a Notes:1?

Interesting, so you build from the outside in like a sculpter? Do you have the basic shape for the whole composition or just the body? I'd love to see an actual step by step here.

In a figure drawing session...absolutely...start with giant shape. Like a piece of granite...then just chip away. Drawing in a crowded place, generally pick a few quick angles and lengths I can quickly identify then use those for reference. If the first few angles are right, the rest will fall in place.

It goes the other way too though. If they are wrong...the rest will fall apart. :)

Cool. Thanks for the tips. I just tried my hand at 30 second poses (online site) for the first time last night. It was interesting to say the least.
