Hey guys,

First off I want to apologize to anyone who has asked me to do a piece and I have failed to get to it. Time has not been a luxury. Between the gallery shows, CTN convention, and going home for the holidays it just got impossible.

Thinking more about this I want to go ahead and throw the prices out there for commissions should anyone want one. I am making them available for a good price but there won't be any redo's. I will however put my best foot forward and make them way worth it to anyone who orders one.

Prices for 8.5 x 11 piece of artwork:

Black and white ink sketch of any character $20

Watercolor drawing/painting of a character $40

Gouache painting of a character $100

Merry Christmas All!!!

To offend or not to offend...this is the question.

Well I have been talking to some people about other cultures and I run into people who always seem offended by something and others who just aren't phased. I got a reply in my comments about the proper term for Aborigine, and it has just pushed me to post something.

This week I have an "Eskimo" girl and have been researching better what to call her after many of these discussions. Even in researching these things, there is not a name that is possible that in some way doesn't offend anyone. There are more of these coming and they have a bit more research to them. But as I am learning ya just can't please them all. And frankly I have nothing but the best intentions with this stuff and really enjoy all races and cultures. My personal question to everyone with offenses such as this is this. Where do the offenses come from? Where did they originate? Are they justified? For instance the "N" word has NEVER been justified. But the "Eskimo's" want to be called Inuits. It never bothered them til this generation, and they have been around forever. In all my research I haven't found that anyone went to Alaska and ran into the "Inuits" and said gee look at this dumb bastard...the word for dumb bastard is "Eskimo"...lets call em that. Further more "Inuit" has now become offensive as a blanket term because it offends the other groups of "Eskimos"...which leads to the final question. When does it end? Sorry for the long winded reply, but I'm an artist who sees something awesome and wants to draw it. While I do my best to make everyone happy, I say screw it after a bit and draw the next thing.

When I think of the Aborigine and Eskimo people I think of nothing but AWESOMENESS!! And so far after proper research seeing that calling an Australian tribal people Aborigine's and calling Alaskan tribal people Eskimo's is in its origin and original intent not offensive in any way.
The biggest thing I am learning is that one offensive thing seems to breed 400 more offensive things.

My solution is that I am going to do my best to use the correct terms for these things but not because it is offensive. I will try to use the correct terms because I feel I should take more interest in these groups I am trying to represent. But if I make this effort and it offends someone still....and without a doubt it will...then screw it.

I would really love to hear what other people think about this stuff? Does anyone else think this oversensitive thing is getting a bit out of hand?

The time for show number two is coming up and though it is smaller there is a nice surprise. It will be held at the Ocean Screening room in Santa Monica so we will be having a mini animated film festival to go along with the artwork.

Oct 17, 2009 4-8pm
The Ocean Screening Room
1401 Ocean Avenue, 1st Floor
Santa Monica, CA 90401

Ocean Screening Room
Ocean Screening Room

For those not familiar with the area it is two blocks west of the 3rd Street Promenade in Santa Monica in the same building as the Portofino restaurant. There is a lot to do in that area. Stop by the show, have dinner, and see a good movie (Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs is a good choice nudge nudge).

Films

My good buddy Justin Rasch and his wife Shelly will be showing their super award winning stop motion short film

Geralds Last Day press kit

There will be a few other stop motion and traditional short films as well. We will start a cycle of the films every half hour and the artwork will be flanking the screen.

Artists

One of the artists showing his work unfortunately will not be at the show as he resides in Italy. His work is amazing and I would encourage any art lovers to come and support him. I am speaking of course of the incredibly talented Claudio Acciari.

Even More Artists

Speaking of talent, the other two artists that I am incredibly grateful to for gracing us with their presence are the powerful David Colman

and the mighty Mark McDonnell

Mark's Blog.

The fifth wheel to this rowdy crew will be myself with some new nomad designs hanging around Craig Harris

Craig's Blog.

We will look forward to seeing you all there!!
